Fourth of July! |
These, of course, are not selected to accompany the Revised Common Lectionary scriptures, but they are consistent with the message of the Gospel and epistle passages for the week. The Fourth of July in the USA is a celebration of independence. It was first observed by the signing of a declaration--the Declaration of Independence. The opening words of that document are so often recited, but the closing words are powerful and deeply meaningful to all people of faith--"for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor." Their reliance was well founded, and their sacred honor was just that--sacred. May we all remember to rely on God just as they did, and may we resolve ourselves to sacred honor in all of our undertakings. The burden of freedom can be scary to pursue, but it is a light burden to bear. The greatest freedom we can know is the freedom that Christ gives us from the grips of our sinful nature. May we all share in this freedom one day.
696: O Beautiful for Spacious Skies (America the Beautiful)
697: America (My Country, 'Tis of Thee)
